It is not easy to decide when to start your maternity leave, but once I reached 26 weeks pregnant I had had enough. I worked in quite a manual position as a picture framer, and some of my duties were beginning to become quite difficult for me to carry out. One of the biggest problems was that my job was much easier to carry out standing up, but after a few months I found it almost impossible to stand up for the majority of the day.

My manager was actually really good with me. When I first became pregnant I had told them that I wanted to continue working for as long as I possibly could, and because of that I don’t think they had even thought of finding a replacement for me when I told them that I couldn’t go on. I gave them somewhat minimal notice that I was going to finish work, because I just snapped one day. I had been dealing with a really big job, and all the machinery I had to use felt like it was straining my stomach. The day was just exhausting and by the end of it I just marched into my manager’s office and told him that I couldn’t do it anymore. I agreed to finish the week, and he told me that it was fine! As is the way, the position is open to me after a period of a year, but I will have to see how I feel then! If I love my child as much as I think I will, then I will never go back!
