Rabbits as Pets for Kids

As parents, we want to give our kids the best upbringing possible and there can be no more memorable experience than having a pet as a child. Pets teach children responsibility while giving them something that they can care for. There’s always a special bond between a child and their first pet, so choosing the right one is important. When deciding on which pet to get for your child there are the standard choices of a dog or a cat. Some people may even go for the easier route of getting a hamster of goldfish. But somewhere in between lays a great choice of pet – the rabbit.

Pet rabbits are unique because they are so much more than cute little animals. They have their own personalities and no two rabbits will be the same. You can’t just leave a bunny in a rabbit cage and expect it to take care of itself. A child will have to maintain a good regime of attention and cleaning to keep a rabbit happy. And yet it won’t take as much effort as keeping up with a dog or cat. So a rabbit is the perfect pet for a family who doesn’t want the heavy responsibly of larger animals, but they will still get a great pet that can connect with its owners.

It’s essential to understand that rabbits have personalities that will dictate their behaviour. So you’ll need to teach your kids how to handle them properly. Some rabbits don’t like to be cuddled and if this is the case then your children will need to know when to give them some privacy. Cleaning can also become an issue since rabbits are capable of making big messes. Thankfully they can be housetrained and this process can be done with the help of your kids. Overall, the experience of training and keeping a rabbit will be a great educational experience. And in the process you might just find a special bond forming that will allow for many great memories to come.
